Sony Alpha 35

The Sony a35 has a translucent mirror design and is identified as a D-SLT. With a 16.2Mp CMOS APS-C sized sensor at its heart, the a35’s photosites (or pixels) are more spread out over a larger sensor surface area. ISO can be set between 100-12800 and the anti-shake system, known as Steady Shot INSIDE, is the sensor-shift type.

Features & performance

There’s a class-leading 15-point phase-detect AF system with 3 cross-type points and you can fire off a burst of images at 5.5fps in Continuous mode or at up to 7fps using the a35’s 1.4x tele-zoom high speed continuous mode that’s available from the mode dial. Without a conventional mirror to reflect the optical pathway of light to an optical viewfinder, the a35 uses an EVF with an impressive 1.44 million-dot resolution. Like the NX11 it also has an eye sensor to detect when the camera is lifted to your eye. Beneath the EVF lies a 3in, 921k-dot LCD screen and beside this is a function button (Fn) to quickly access settings such as metering and face detection, while there’s also a D-Pad to take instant control of White Balance, ISO, Self-timer and Drive modes.

A single command dial is located in front of the shutter button, so to adjust Aperture in Manual mode the Exposure Compensation +/- has to be held.

In the hand, the a35 has a small grip and lightweight feel. That said, the grip has a neat rubberised finish and there’s a dedicated movie-rec button to capture full HD videos at 1920x1080@25fps. Continuous AF is on hand to use when recording videos, but like the D3100, AF whirring is picked up by the internal microphone. The 15 AF points are positioned fairly centrally in the frame and we’d prefer a wider spread, however the AF performance is fast and accurate.
