Up until recently, the 400AW was the largest backpack in LowePro’s Flipside range. Step forward the Lowepro Flipside 500AW, a larger version designed for enthusiasts or pros who’d like a larger internal compartment to house extra photo gear.
Just like the Flipside 400AW, the Lowepro Flipside 500AWfeatures a rear-entry design and the main compartment is so deep, it easily accommodates pro-sized D-SLRs or enthusiast models fitted with battery grips. We crammed in two enthusiast D-SLRs (with lenses attached) and used the remaining space to store a total of six lenses, one of which was a large 100-400mm f/4-5.6 telephoto zoom. Even with all this kit stored away we found space for a flashgun and made use of the three memory card pockets, though we could have done with a few more.
The design of the exterior is as good as the interior; two side pockets and a large front pocket provide plenty of space for accessories or a tablet and the only feature it lacks is a laptop compartment. For one of these, try the Lowepro Pro Trekker 300AW, which provides a similar internal capacity. The 500AW is very comfortable on the shoulders and offers a waist and sternum strap for added stability on the move. There’s also a tripod holder and all-weather cover built into the thought-through design. If you’re after a sizeable backpack then look no further, the Flipside 500AW ticks all the right boxes.
